I usually advise people to avoid using jargon, technical language and TLAs (three-letter-acronyms) to avoid confusion. But it is often necessary to use the correct industry terms when speaking with your agency when you want to obtain the best image or graphic for your brand.
We recently worked with a well-meaning client who insisted on using the terms “high quality” and “low quality” when he meant “high resolution” and “low resolution.” We explained that he was confusing quality — how good the image was, with image size — how reproducible the image was. In fact, the resolution was appropriate for the web, but not for print. Once we understood what he was looking for, we were able to quickly remedy the problem.
Well, the smart folks at Pagemodo have created a terrific (high-quality) infographic (web-resolution) covering many of the basic design terms that clients need in order to effectively communicate with their agencies and vice versa. I think that the “process” section could use a little more about number of revisions and “AAs” or author alterations that a client can expect before being charged for new changes, but overall, this is definitely a keeper!
